Energy Audits

Energy audits are carried out in order to find energy savings and compare current energy usage performance with businesses of comparable nature and size.  An energy audit report allows the managers of a facility to better understand its energy use and determine where savings can be made most cost effectively.  There are three types of energy audits;
  • Level 1 Energy Audit - This energy audit is the simplest energy audit and is often referred to as a walk-through energy audit.  It includes a survey of energy costs, a comparison to a relevant benchmark often on a floor area basis, and an on-site walk-through inspection to look for energy savings, and a rough order of savings possible from recommendations made.
  • Level 2 Energy Audit - This energy audit includes everything in a Level 1 Energy Audit, plus a more comprehensive site inspection, energy balance (reconciliation of purchases and end-uses) and a list of savings opportunities.  This is what is normally considered an "energy audit" in New Zealand and is adequate for most premises, unless more detailed justification of capital expenditure is required.  Costs and savings are estimated to about +/- 20 % accuracy, and a simple payback provided.
  • Level 3 Energy Audit - This energy audit is a more detailed, comprehensive and accurate audit.  Savings opportunities are investigated in more detail and are based on measurements taken over time, which are more reliable.  Costs and savings in this energy audit are typically estimated to +/- 10% and long-term financial aspects are shown, including discounted-cash flows, net-positive value and payback for specific opportunities.  Level 3 energy audits can be carried out on specific opportunities, as well as on whole sites.  Typically this type of energy audit is done for investment purposes, where a financier requires credit risk analysis as well as a technical and cost report.
A comprehensive energy audit will identify current energy use patterns and provide information on where energy consumption can be reduced, and how to save money on your energy.  It will provide a basis from which you can manage your energy, and an energy management plan can be developed to permanently reduce your energy costs.
